”Typhoid fever is a severe invasive bacterial illness caused by salmonella typhi. Until now, limited data from Sub-Saharan Africa has been available regarding the disease. In this study, a sentinel network for typhoid fever surveillance was established at 13 sites across Africa, including the Bandim Health Project in Guinea-Bissau. Blood was cultured from a total of 13431 febrile patients. Typhoid fever and other non-typhi salmonellas were major causes for invasive bacterial infections at the sites, especially in children and areas with high population density. The findings from this study, abbreviated TSAP, will help guide future attempts to control the disease, including the possible introduction of typhoid fever vaccination in some areas.
